Husband and Wife duo to go far in their next career move!

Working for over 30 years in their respective fields, Geoffrey (an industrial electrician by trade) and his wife Pauline (a corporate administrator) have both had long and successful careers but they have recently decided to start planning for their semi-retirement phase in life. Both share a passion for travel, especially road travelling in their motorhome, and they have ventured to many caravan parks around Australia and in their home state of South Australia.

Hearing about the Skills Checkpoint for Older Workers program through a friend, they decided to make contact to see if the program could help them plan for their retirement.

The Australian Government funded program supports persons aged 40 or over who are either still working or recently unemployed (under 12 months). The program provides one-on-one career mentoring support, including a skills and career assessment, and access to 50%-75% towards training with funding co-contribution (up to an amount of $2,200), if the participant requires any re-skilling for their career progression.

Geoffrey and Pauline both decided to participate in the program and soon made contact with their Skills Checkpoint Career Advisor, Paula Wright from BUSY At Work. Paula assisted in guiding them towards a transitioning career path in the travel and tourism sector. Both are now enrolled in a Certificate IV in Tourism and Travel and have plans to become full time caravan park managers and, after gaining experience and heading into their semi-retirement phase, take on relief tourism park management work.

Geoffrey said of the program, “After a friend recommended it, we found the whole process really easy to apply and everyone at BUSY At Work were great. I’ve just started my study and I would recommend this program to others”.

His wife Pauline also said, “From our first enquiry, the assistance from the program happened really quickly, quicker than I thought! The plan is for my husband, who has the trade background, to look after the maintenance requirements in the park, and I can be the ‘people-person’ who can look after the customer experience”.

Thanks to the Skills Checkpoint for Older Workers program, Geoffrey and Pauline’s dream to become tourist park managers and fulfill their love for travel adventures is now becoming a reality.

If you’re over 40 and fit the eligibility criteria, the Skills Checkpoint program can assist your future career plans too!
